With the increasing interest in and popularity of Mediterranean Gardens and exotic plants, combined with our change in climate (fewer and less severe frosts), the choice and availability of palms that grow happily in the UK has never been better. Palms that were once thought tender are increasingly found to be reliable.
Giving an exotic, “jungley” feel, palms are an exciting addition to any garden. As well as providing fabulous architectural foliage they are an ideal plant to be left in containers that can enhance an area of decking or patio.
We have a large stock of hardy palms in various sizes, from 1ft to 12ft with larger sizes or rarer species being available by special order. Our main stock lines include:
- Brahea Armata – Mexican Blue Palm
A surprisingly hardy palm, given a very well drained soil and planted in full sun. A slow grower with silvery blue fan-shaped leaves.
- Brahea Edulis – Guadalupe Palm
A very large, fan-shaped leaf palm. When mature, we have found it tolerant of light / heavy frost but it would be prudent to offer some frost protection in colder areas. A beautiful palm, well worth the effort.
- Butia Capitata – Jelly Palm
A fabulous and elegant palm. Silvery blue / green coloured Pinnate palm. This palm is growing in popularity due to its hardiness against wind and frost. Best planted as an older specimen, this is a truly majestic palm.
- Chamaerops Humilis – Mediterranean Fan Palm
One of our personal favourites, it can be grown in a wide range of situations. A robust suckering palm making a large, low growing, bushy, multi-trunked specimen. Tolerates wind and heavy frost and is tolerant of dry, arid conditions. A real trouble-free palm.
- Chamaerops Excelsor – Trachycarpus Fortunii
A moderate, quick-growing palm. Generally a single trunk palm producing large, fan-shaped leaves. Chusan palms are extremely frost-hardy, although to give a perfect specimen plant it will require some protection from the wind.
- Cycas Revoluta – Sago Palm
One of the most beautiful palms; very slow growing. Suitable for container growth and tolerant of light frost if offered a little protection.
- Phoenix Canariensis – Canary Island Date Palm
A large Pinnate palm that is proving reliable in the UK, mature specimens coping well with heavy frosts. Plant in fertile, well drained soil in full sun and give some protection in colder areas.
Not for the faint-hearted. This awesome palm from Argentina is the bad boy of all palms. A very slow growing palm, often found as multi-trunked specimens, with trunks adorned with large spines and beautiful silvery blue, fan-shaped foliage, also very spiky. Tolerant of heavy frost and proving to be a robust palm.
We have a limited number of large, multi-trunked specimens, although we are also able to take orders for specific sizes.
A beautiful fast-growing palm with fan-shaped leaves and a bulbous trunk. These palms are extremely good value, robust palms, easy to keep if offered some frost protection!
