Gardens reflect man’s control over nature, epitomised in the art of topiary. Topiary art has been practised in gardens around the world for thousands of years, evolving to the high level of intricacy we see today!
For those gardeners that prefer an ordered or formal look to their gardens, topiary is a must. We stock an extensive range of topiary in a wide choice of plant species, the most popular being:
A traditional topiary plant used widely to create low clipped hedges in knot gardens and also ideal for clipping into geometric shapes such as cones, cubes and spheres. A lovely compact evergreen shrub, ideal for container growth.
Fast growing and easy to grow, cumpressus is available in many forms, including spirals, cylinders and pom poms, etc. Strong growing and easy to keep, cumpressus is excellent value for money.
We carry a small range of hand selected Japanese Macro Bonsai. These are ideal for Japanese gardens as a single specimen focal point. Our macro bonsai is created out of Ilex Crenata, a micro-leafed dwarf holly and is cloud pruned over 30-40 years. Each specimen is created free hand and as a result each specimen is unique.
Our most popularly used topiary medium. Ligustrum is a fast growing evergreen shrub that lends itself to being formed and clipped around metal cages to create literally any shape or form that is in the artist’s imagination!
On our visits to the Tuscan grower, we have seen horses with carriage and passengers, intricate in every detail. Here on our nursery we carry a wide range of forms, including storks; dolphins; spirals; roman columns, which could be utilised as sundials; dinosaurs; umbrellas and street lamps, which can be wired up and used within your garden for lighting. We are also happy to take commissions if you have something in particular that you would like creating.
We have a small range of pinus macro bonsai. Pruned in the same manner as the Japanese macro bonsai but grown in Italy, these give a similar effect for less money – beautiful.
Those who have visited the likes of Hampton Court Palace will have seen beautifully crafted geometric shapes in Taxus – the embodiment of English Topiary.
Taxus is evergreen and very slow growing, an ideal plant for topiary. We carry a variety of shapes and forms and we are happy to source to individual requirements – simply contact us.
